Pellet Rifle

Made a visit to a widows home and picked up a pellet rifle to sell.  It is a Remington Vantage 1200. The caliber is .177, and is a break barrel rifle with open sights (fiber optic). The wood is in excellent condition.

Practice Match-High Power Rifle

I knew that Saturdays weather would be nice (for the end of March), and a little windy.  However, I did not expect that much wind...about 20-25 mph winds.  The direction of the wind was coming from my backside and then continuing on downrange.  I think it actually gave the bullets a boost with that good tail wind! Since this was the first match of the year, it was a practice match. Good thing!  It was supposed to be a Cross the Course match, however, we changed the match to 300 yd prone only using 600 yd reduced targets. My rifle was missing the front sling swivel, which meant I had no way to attach the sling. I tried shooting without artificial support, just my arm.  Will brought over a support and that helped me get a good zero on the scope.  I was a little slow and only shot 18 out of 22 rounds.  The next string I shot a 184 with six X's.  I was 1.5 inches low of center. Did pretty good in the wind.  The next string I let a visitor shoot my rifle.  He brought his Grandson to shoot and said he had never shot before.  I gave him the opportunity, and he really enjoyed it.  Could not stop thanking me and shaking my hand after he was done.  A lot of internal satisfaction on my part. You can see the scores of the practice match at: http://www.centervillesmallarms.org/2012/31marscores.pdf

Tried out some new ammo in the Remington 40X. Used the ELEY SPORT .22 ammo (about $10 for a box of 50).  Got three  '5 shot' groups under 1/2 inch diameter.  One downfall to the ammo is that it is more expensive than regular .22 ammo. The benefit is that it is really accurate.  Since I am trying to be very accurate on targets, then I will use it for matches.  I will use 'Federal Auto Match' ammo the rest of the time, as in practice and varmints.  The 'Federal Auto Match'  is available at Walmart for about $15 for 335 rounds.

Looking forward to a .22 match this weekend in springville area. I took a Rem 40X match rifle, removed the olympic open sights, added a scope and bipod. I will cut back on soda drinks and chug water in preparation for the match.

M1Garand

Went to Logan for a match with Eric Smith. Had a great visit. Spent the morning teaching some Reserve Cadets how to shoot the M1's. I was hoping to do better than the cadets (their fist time). My rear sight was loose and my groups sucked. I asked the other guys what they thought the problem was with the rear sight. They said I had a screw loose! Sure enough! Got it fixed and will try again April 14th.
